Douglas Boyd (Cond.)
 
       

Douglas Boyd is currently Artistic Director of Garsington Opera and Music Director of L'Orchestre de Chambre de Paris.

In recent years he has held the positions of Chief Conductor of the Musikkollegium Winterthur, Music Director of Manchester Camerata, Principal Guest Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Partner of St Paul Chamber Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of City of London Sinfonia.

He was born in Glasgow and studied the oboe with Janet Craxton at the Royal Academy of Music in London and with Maurice Bourgue in Paris. He was a founder member and principal oboist of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe until 2002 when he stopped playing to concentrate on conducting. He has also conducted them on several occasions.

Over recent years in the UK Douglas Boyd has conducted all the BBC Orchestras, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Northern Sinfonia. On the continent he has worked with, amongst others, Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne, Orchestre National de Lyon, Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg.

Further afield he has conducted the Nagoya Symphony Orchestra in Japan and made a hugely successful visit to Australia conducting both the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras. He returned to the MSO in 2011 to present the complete cycle of Beethoven Symphonies and in the 2016/17 season conducted the Beethoven Piano Concertos with Paul Lewis.

His regular North American appearances have included concerts with the St Paul Chamber Orchestra, Baltimore, Colorado, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, Pacific and Seattle Symphony Orchestras. In Canada he has appeared with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and National Arts Orchestra in Ottawa.

Operas he has conducted include Die Zauberflöte for Glyndebourne Opera on Tour, and Salieri's La Grotto di Tronfonio for Zürich Opera. In the 12/13 season he made his debut with Opera North conducting Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito. Productions he has conducted for Garsington Opera include Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cos fan Tutte, Eugene Onegin and concert performances of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Haydn's The Creation with Ballet Rambert.

Douglas Boyd's recording of the Bach Concerti for DG marked his recording debut as director/soloist and he has since gone on to build an extensive discography. His recordings as a conductor with Manchester Camerata of the complete Beethoven Symphonies and Mahler Symphony No 4 (on Avie) and Das Lied von der Erde have received universal critical acclaim. Recent engagements have included debuts with the Bergen Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Basel Sinfoniieorchester, Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra and returns to both Detroit and Colorado Symphony Orchestras.

Other recent and future highlights include returning to conduct the Melbourne Symphony, BBC Philharmonic Kammerakademie Potsdam, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and The Minnesota Orchestra. The 16/17 season also includes a return to Garsington for Le nozze di Figaro and new commission Silver Birch by Roxanna Panufnik, and of course many concerts with L'Orchestre de Chambre de Paris at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the new Philharmonie and on tour.
